Security update - October 2016

Be vigilant.  Do not ignore alarms. Call it in!

There have been five break ins so far this month.

What investigations reveal so far:

  • All incidents have taken place near building sites.

  • Burglars have managed to by-pass beams and alarms and it appears they use reconnaissance tactics such as taking ‘selfies’ outside houses to get footage of security measures and triggering beams using stones over a period of time to test activation and response times.

  • The burglars use tools to remove window panes for quick access into ground floor studies/TV rooms where they know they will find bags/laptops/ipads.

  • They do not appear to want any confrontations and do not appear violent.  They seem to want to get in and out quickly.

What the HCG is doing:

  • Arranged new and extra CSS patrols.

  • Arranged raids of building sites with SAPS using a finger print machine.

  • Replaced the lock on the gate on open field on Stirling.

  • Ensured all cameras are working and iSentry operating.

  • Arranged for new power supply to 2 cameras that were interrupted as a result of building work.

  • Cut grass fields on the Spruit.

  • Working with JPMD and ward councillor on moving squatters out of public spaces.

  • Working with neighbouring resident associations to move squatters off the Spruit and prevent setting up of new camps.

  • Liaising with developers regarding fencing off the area between the Shell Garage on William Nicol and Rosehaven retirement village.

  • Maintaining pressure on the displaced persons unit to make long term plans for housing of sqautters.
