Dear Resident

The past few weeks have been a flurry of activity and an amazing showcase of the energy and generosity of our residents. Within a few days of issuing a plea to our residents to assist in funding a fence to fence off the area near the Total garage and Rosehaven we have already collected over R70 000! This is an amazing achievement! This achievement was made possible through the active involvement of one of our residents who made a personal and concerted effort directly with affected parties and private contractors. It is an example of how together we can make good things happen! Read more about the proposal here.

This fencing proposal was one of the issues raised at the Public Meeting on Displaced Persons facilitated by the City on 26 October. Click here for minutes of that meeting.  Mindful of the risk of displaced persons moving into Hurlingham Park, the City has put  together an action plan to remove the people who have taken up residence in the park and to fence it. Security remains an issue of grave concern for most residents. As the HGC we rely on the community to work together to make our neighbourhood safe. There is no single solution. Cameras do not prevent crime. Nor in fact do patrols, electric fences, alarms, dogs, guards, beams or bars. Security comprises all of these factors and cameras are merely one of the means intended to make the most of our resources.

One is able, from a single place in a control room, to  monitor developments and deploy resources. With one vehicle, or for that matter 10 vehicles patrolling the suburb, it remains possible for a person to simply wait for a vehicle to pass and then access a home. The intention with cameras is to seek to mitigate this risk. Is it perfect? No it is not. Is it better than nothing? Well, yes. For this reason we are in the final phases of obtaining comparative quotes for the upgrade of our ageing camera infrastructure, an initiative that we plan to fund from savings made when funds were withheld from CSS while the camera connections were not satisfactory.

To our new contributors - welcome - we are delighted to have seen so many new sign ups! Together we can make our neighbourhood so much better! Click here for more information for new contributors.

HGC Halloween just gets better and better! This year saw our residents pulling out all the stops. Witches, pumpkins and even a band came out to play!

We are in the process of refreshing our website, so please be patient if there are any teething problems while we implement the changes. We have some exciting ideas for this project and will update you soon.

Until next time!

Thanks for caring about where we live

Kind regards
The HGC Committee
