November 2017

Dear Resident

As the year hurtles to an end with deadlines to beat, deals to close, and the usual barrage of year-end parties and prize givings, it’s time for our final update of the year.

Firstly, we’d like to welcome 16 new members to our community of contributors! The more contributors we have, the better we can do to make our suburb safer and more efficient. Thank you for signing up.

This month saw a big reduction in security incidents from 9 to 4 incidents for the month of November. A number of factors played a role in this, including co-operation and information sharing between residents, SAPS and CSS.  Click here to read about the individual incidents and arrest of suspects.

Through the incredible cooperation of so many of you we were able to secure sufficient funding to fence the area near Rosehaven and the Total garage. The City has provided approval in principle for the fence, but because of the fence's proximity to the river we need final environmental approval. The HGC has been interacting with the relevant authorities and we are hopeful that the approval will be granted in time so that the fence can go up before the builders' holiday on 16 December. We will keep you updated as soon as that approval is granted. In the meantime, a gate will be erected at the currently open entrance in the suburb's palisade fencing near Stafford Avenue to try to control access between the suburb and the Spruit. This will be locked at night and monitored by a security camera.

What’s clear is that your security is dependent on that of your neighbouring properties, so residents with building sites next door to them need to be extra vigilant.  Arming your security system and beams is essential!

It’s also time to start thinking about your home security before going on leaveHere are some useful tips provided by CSS:

  • For the past few years over the December period there has been an increase in incidents where criminals switch off the power to a property, wait for the alarm battery to become depleted, then access the property and take their time to loot valuable contents.  Please try to have a system in place where you are alerted if power is lost to the alarm system and you're away.
  • Pack all tools away that can be used to break in.
  • Make sure rubbish bins are stored away so they can’t be used to get over walls etc.

In the New Year we plan to present a comprehensive and independent security assessment to the community. If you are interested in joining the sub-committee that we are establishing to assist with this task please contact security@hurlingham.org.za

The new administration has been in charge of running the City for 93 days now, read the latest update from Councillor David Potter here.

If you need to escalate any billing queries click here to see who to contact in our Region, as there is a new system in place.

Residents have also had much success reporting issues, such as potholes, damage to pavements etc to the Council and getting them resolved.  See www.lookandlog.co.za for a how-to guide on how to report issues.

Wishing you all happy summer holidays and very best wishes over the festive season.

Thanks for caring about where we live
